Don’t GeoFence Me In

The Cole Porter classic Don’t Fence Me In was written way back in 1934. But it was not until 1944, when Roy Rogers recorded it that it made the charts. Perhaps, in our new era it could be retitled Don’t GeoFence Me In and sung by vigilante truck drivers as they pave new roads.

Hope you like the song, but for now lets talk about GeoFencing and its importance in Telematics. GeoFencesare an imposition on the physical world by the virtual. Thus it is more than just a virtual perimeter it becomes a physical universe barrier based on a location based service following a location based device housed in the vehicle.

Boundaries are determined at HQ and when the offending vehicle leaves those parameters, the driver is notified automatically as well as the fleet manager and dispatcher. GeoFencing enables the fleet manager to create zone determining work location, customers, etc. When the GeoFence is crossed by the offending vehicle “alarms” go off and like I said this could trigger a warning to the user via text or phone. It can get really hinky if the vehicle contains immobilization equipment, because then it can just be shutdown. Boy that would be embarrassing to say the least.

Obviously, this is a very useful feature for monitoring drivers especially when there have been violations of company policy regarding personal usage. But even more importantly you know where your drivers are in a pinch and can route them more efficiently.

FleetMatics GPS Fleet Tracking can help you with that. Take a test drive!
