So how can you as an experience designer make sure that your app includes these kinds of magic moment?

Below are 5 tips to maximise connections to the landscape within your app:

1. Design for coincidence

Unless you are Disney you can’t control everything that will happen in the environment. Plants, animals and people will come and go in public spaces of their own accord. But there are often circumstances that mean that certain kinds of naturally occurring event happen more predictably in certain places. The tip is to scout out the area where your app is staged, observe it at different times of day and note whether there are common occurrences that you can include somehow in your app. Typical occurrences might be at the beginning and the end of a working day when lots of commuters in suits or school children in uniform might pass through. Or perhaps your app is in a public square where gulls or pigeons are often present, feeding on crumbs from picnic lunches. If you are creative in using these observations somehow in your app then occasionally a person may encounter just what they have been told about in the app. For example I once interviewed a person who came back from trying out an app designed for the Bristol Festival of Nature, they were really excited that just as they were hearing about black gulls one landed in front of them. You can’t guarantee that everyone will get that experience but if your design maximises the chances that a powerful coincidence could happen then when it does it will seem really magical.

2. Record narrative in-situ

If your app has located narrative then try to create and record that narrative in-situ, describe what you see around you as if someone was walking with you. It will make the language relevant and personal to the listener and really give them a sense of being in the story or walking in the story tellers shoes. For stories about the neighbourhood then memories can often be evoked about a place that would not spring to mind otherwise. Walk with your story teller and let them use the environment to inspire them rather than force a particular story that may not be as closely related to the physical environment. 3. Use description and photos to draw users attention to specific things

GPS can be used in the app to trigger content in a particular region, but it cannot be relied upon to pin-point specific objects that you want the user to connect to. If there are fixed structures like benches and statues then involving them in your located app can be an easy and effective way of connecting your users with where they are and making them feel like they are really in the story. We have seen that creating apps that use public space as a stage can deliver new and compelling personal and intimate experiences. They are not yet common-place but we hope that they will soon become more common. As experience designers we should make sure that the app design does not encourage behaviours or actions that violate the social protocols in a particular public space or offend or spoil the experience of other users in the space. Or at least we should be aware of what we are doing if we do want to change usage of a space.

A Little Reference for Your Choosing GPS Devices—Add-on or In-dash Model

It is true that once you’ve decided it’s time for an in-car navigator, your next decision is which type of system is best for you: an in-dash unit or a portable add-on model. Each has benefits and drawbacks.

If you want to maintain the factory look of your dash and add the convenience of a large touch screen monitor, look for an in-dash navigation system. Many of today’s new cars offer in-dash GPS as an option, and some offer it as standard equipment. The earliest models were CD-ROM-based and required multiple discs to cover the entire United States. Manufacturers later made the switch to DVD-ROM-based system, so maps for the entire country could usually fit on a single disc, two at the most. Today’s OEM systems are often hard-drive-based, a configuration that offers even more storage space and features faster access times than disc-based systems, resulting in snappier responsiveness when browsing the map and faster routing once a destination has been chosen.

We also see a few manufacturers begin to make the jump from hard-drive-based storage to flash memory type storage. In addition to offering even faster response and search times, this change also does away with moving parts, which should mean that these systems should hold up better in the harsh environment that is a car’s cabin in summer or winter.

In-dash systems are usually more expensive than their portable counterparts, but they usually feature larger screens and integrate better with other vehicle electronics. A typical in-dash system consists of a car stereo with a built-in monitor, an external GPS antenna, and sometimes a hideaway connection box that contains the A/V inputs and outputs. It includes audio, climate control, and other vehicle system controls in one location that’s easy to access. In addition to CD playback and AM/FM reception, most in-dash systems include DVD playback, so you can watch a movie on the built-in screen when the car is parked.

Society is in continuous development. Portable navigation devices are beginning to rival (and in some cases, eclipse) the functionality of some of the pricier in-dash models. These systems are generally half the price of their more advanced, feature-rich siblings, but there are trade-offs. For example, the screen size may be smaller and you’ll lose some of the more advanced features like integrated Bluetooth for hands-free calling or advanced lane guidance. Still, these systems are an affordable way to bring accurate GPS navigation with voice-prompted driving directions to any number of vehicles.

As for the relatively new smart phones featuring some sort of built-in GPS or A-GPS receiver, they are extremely portable by nature and their all-in-one nature saves the user the trouble of carrying two discrete devices. Additionally, a smart phone’s always-on data connection means that they often feature traffic, Web search for points of interest, and the most recent versions of available maps. However, a phone will often have a smaller screen than the average portable navigation device, as well as an interface that’s less than ideal for using while driving because phones are designed as handheld devices, mounting and hands-free accessories will be required to legally use them from behind the wheel. Additionally, navigation apps that pull their maps from the cloud will leave users unable to navigate if their data connection is severed or otherwise unavailable.
